Traditional Tomato Sauce

A rich and authentic tomato sauce perfect for pasta, pizza, or as a base for various dishes. Made from fresh tomatoes and classic herbs, it brings the taste of Italy to your kitchen.

Ingredients

2 lbs fresh tomatoes
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp dried oregano
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped

Instructions

1. Bring a pot of water to a boil and prepare an ice bath.
2. Score the bottom of each tomato with an X and blanch in boiling water for 1 minute.
3. Transfer tomatoes to ice bath and peel skins.
4. Chop tomatoes and set aside.
5. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
6. Add onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
7. Add garlic and cook for another minute, stirring frequently.
8. Add chopped tomatoes, salt, pepper, sugar, and oregano.
9. Simmer uncovered for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
10. Stir in fresh basil and simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
11. Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary.
12. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheating

Reheat gently on the stove over low heat until warmed through, stirring occasionally.
