Traditional Home-Baked White Bread

Ingredients

5 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
2 cups warm water (110°F)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Additional flour for kneading
Butter for greasing

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
2. Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough begins to form.
3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
5. Punch down the dough, divide it into two equal parts, and shape each into a loaf.
6. Place the loaves in greased 9x5 inch loaf pans, cover, and let rise again for 30-40 minutes until doubled.
7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
8. Bake the loaves for 25-30 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
9. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before removing from the pans. Cool completely on a wire rack.

Storage

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheating

To reheat, wrap in foil and place in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for 10 minutes, or toast slices until warm.
