Traditional German Red Cabbage

Ingredients

1 medium red cabbage, shredded
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions

1. Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat.
2. Add onions and cook until translucent.
3. Stir in apples and cook for 2-3 minutes.
4. Add shredded cabbage and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
5. Pour in apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, black pepper, water, and red wine vinegar. Stir well.
6. Cover and simmer on low heat for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
7. Add ground cloves and adjust seasoning to taste. Cook for another 10 minutes.
8. Remove from heat and let it sit for a few minutes before serving.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Reheating

Reheat on the stovetop over medium heat until warmed through, or microwave in a covered dish.
