Traditional Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients

4 medium-sized green tomatoes
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cornmeal
2 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
2 large eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

1. Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
2. In a shallow dish, combine flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
3. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and buttermilk.
4. Dip each tomato slice into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and back into the flour mixture to coat thoroughly.
5. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
6. Fry the tomato slices in hot oil until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.
7. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels before serving.

Storage

Store leftover fried green tomatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Reheating

Reheat by placing them on a baking sheet in a 375°F preheated oven for 10 minutes or until warmed through.
