Traditional Soft Pretzels

Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup baking soda
1 egg (for egg wash)
Coarse salt (for sprinkling)

Instructions

1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water and let it sit until frothy, about 5 minutes.
2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture, and knead the dough until smooth and elastic, approximately 10 minutes.
3. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
4. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
5. In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
6. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces, roll each piece into a 20-inch rope, and shape into pretzels.
7. Boil pretzels in the baking soda solution for 30 seconds on each side, then place them on the prepared baking sheets.
8. Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
9. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
10. Let cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Storage

Store pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Reheating

Reheat pretzels in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes until warm.
