Traditional Slow-Cooked Apple Butter

Ingredients

6 lbs apples (preferably a mix of sweet and tart varieties), peeled, cored, and chopped
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Place the chopped apples in the slow cooker.
2. Combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt in a bowl and sprinkle over the apples.
3. Cover and cook on low heat for 10 hours, stirring occasionally until apples become a rich brown and thickened.
4. Puree the mixture with an immersion blender or in batches using a stand blender until smooth.
5. Stir in vanilla extract, then cook uncovered on low for an additional 1-2 hours until the desired consistency is achieved.
6. Let the apple butter cool before transferring it to sterilized jars.

Storage

Store apple butter in sterilized jars in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks, or freeze for up to 6 months.

Reheating

Reheat in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through.
