Traditional Italian Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients

2 tbsp olive oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 lbs fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped
2 tbsp tomato paste
1 cup water
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped

Instructions

1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
2. Add the onion and garlic, sautéing until they are soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
3. Stir in the fresh tomatoes and cook for another 5 minutes, until the tomatoes start to break down.
4. Add the tomato paste, water, sugar, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
5. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
6. Uncover and continue to simmer for an additional 15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
7. Stir in the fresh basil leaves just before serving.

Storage

Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheating

Reheat on the stovetop over low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Alternatively, microwave in a covered dish, stirring every 30 seconds.
