Traditional Baked Scalloped Potatoes

A classic version of scalloped potatoes featuring tender layers of potatoes in a creamy sauce, perfect as a comforting side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

4 lbs Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
4 cups whole milk
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish and set aside.
3. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
4. Add onions and garlic, sauté until onions are translucent.
5. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, until lightly golden.
6. Gradually whisk in milk, ensuring no lumps remain.
7. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until sauce thickens.
8. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until cheese is melted.
9. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
10. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
11. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
12. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top.
13. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
14. Remove foil and bake an additional 30 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and top is golden brown.
15. Garnish with parsley before serving.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheating

Reheat in a preheated 350°F oven for 15-20 minutes or until heated through.
