Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/4 cup buttermilk
2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 13x18-inch sheet pan.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda.
3. In a medium saucepan, melt 1 cup butter over medium heat. Add 1/4 cup cocoa powder, water, buttermilk, and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and stir into the flour mixture.
4. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, 1 tablespoon maple syrup, and vanilla extract. Add to the flour mixture and mix until well combined.
5. Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan and spread evenly. Sprinkle chopped pecans on top.
6. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
7. While the cake bakes, prepare the frosting: In a saucepan, melt 1/4 cup butter. Add 1/4 cup buttermilk, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon maple syrup, and vanilla.
8. Once the cake is done, pour the warm frosting over the hot cake, spreading evenly. Allow to cool before serving.

Storage

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Reheating
