Baklava

Baklava is a rich, sweet dessert made of layers of flaky phyllo pastry filled with a mixture of chopped nuts and sweetened with honey. This classic Middle Eastern treat offers an exquisite balance of crunchy, nutty, and sweet flavors that will enhance any celebratory meal.

Ingredients

1 lb phyllo pastry
1 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
1 cup almonds, finely chopped
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup water
1/2 cup honey
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Butter the bottom and sides of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
3. In a bowl, combine walnuts, almonds, and cinnamon.
4. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
5. Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo.
6. Repeat layers, ending with about 6-8 sheets of phyllo on top, brushing each with butter.
7. Cut into diamond shapes with a sharp knife.
8. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.
9. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, honey, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes.
10. Pour the hot syrup over the cooled baklava.
11. Allow baklava to absorb syrup for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.

Storage

Store baklava in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Reheating

Baklava is best enjoyed at room temperature and does not require reheating.
